Community pharmacies are equipped with real-time automated alerting for interactions between two prescription drugs. However, no mechanism exists to adequately check for potentially harmful interactions between prescription drugs and over the counter (OTC) drugs, food, and alcohol. A patient can purchase a potentially lethal combination of products from the same store unbeknownst to the pharmacist and without any automated stopgaps. Our solution merges pharmacy prescription records and front-end sales in order to flag potentially harmful combinations in real time at the point of purchase and allows for risk assessment and intervention by the pharmacist.
